But bracelets are subtler accessories, and easily overlooked, yet the best bracelets for men really up your fashion game.

The best bracelets for men add a polished edge to your look.

Bracelets are not an impulse buy like a pair of sunglasses. You need to put some thought and consideration into the purchase, especially if it’s expensive and you want to build a collection. Sorting through the styles, materials and designs out there can be overwhelming. “It’s daunting because there’s so much to consider,” says fashion blogger Sabir Peele, of Men’s Style Pro. Ahead, I spoke to fashion stylists, and tapped my own fashion expertise, to weigh in on the various choices. Paul Smith

Sizes: 8.3 inches | Material: Leather, copper, zinc | Clasp type: Magnetic clasp | Width: 0.2 inches

If you think magnetic bracelets are cheap, this Paul Smith version will change your mind: Crafted from rich woven leather, the bracelet has a weighty copper and zinc clasp that easily snaps together, eliminating any hassle from taking it on and off. This bracelet comes in black as well as a bolder multi-color version.

There are no hard and fast rules but think about what bracelets will be most comfortable for you to wear everyday. “Measure your wrist size and pick a bracelet that is about a half inch larger, or a full inch larger if you want a little more play,” says fashion writer and strategist Stephen Millioti. Then weigh your style options: Do you want an open cuff that easy to slip on and off, or closed chain that stays put if you’re active and on the go?

Much like clothing, the material of the bracelet is an important factor in what you purchase. “Invest in one good gold or silver bracelet that will stand the test of time,” says Milioti. Examine the clasp closely, too. “Make sure it's strong and secure, and for a pricier item, ask about policies for repair or replacement,” Miliot advises. Beyond that, it’s helpful to look for options that have lasting power and not a gimmicky aesthetic, suggests Peele. “Personally, I wear a twisted cable David Yurman cuff bracelet every day. It’s sterling silver with 18k yellow gold caps and has the ability to enhance any outfit.”

This is probably the most important consideration. Are you planning to wear your bracelet alone or mix it with others? Based on that answer, you might go for a thicker, chunkier style or one that’s sleek and minimalist. Also, consider if your bracelet is just for special occasions, in which case it can be dressier and bold, or more for everyday with a laidback, comfortable style. “Remember, your wrist should speak to who you are,” says Milioti.

“Almost any bracelet can pull double-duty when it comes to being dressing up or down,” says Peele. The most versatile width, though, is three to four millimeters since it creates a minimalist and tailored look, finds Peele.

Here’s an easy formula: Layer a metal chain with a beaded bracelet and a woven leather bracelet: These three styles always look good together since they offer an interesting mix of metals, textures and colors, explains Milioti. To mix up your look but keep it from being too chaotic, stick to a coherent color theme: think bracelets all in yellow gold or black (with a beaded bracelet and leather band, for example). Have a visual plan, and then experiment a little to see what looks best on you.
